DNA, the molecule that carries genetic information, embodies a complex
linguistic system which poses many challenges to computational efforts
to describe and analyze it at an appropriately abstract
level. Logic programming and Definite Clause Grammars (DCGs) offer a
powerful, flexible, and reasonably efficient tool for such
investigations. This paper describes studies of the linguistic
properties of DNA using DCGs, and defines a series of specific
usages within the DCG formalism that appear to be especially useful
and appropriate for the domain.
